Episode 118: What Is Remy Hair?

By Mariah

I am back! Mariah, I want to talk about Remy Remi hair. What it is, and why not everything that has the name is actually the real deal. Remy Human Hair is one of the highest grades of human hair extensions. Human hair is a preferred choice for hair extensions, hairpieces and wigs because it has the most realistic natural look. And the hair has a longer lifespan than that of synthetic and regular human hair that has been mixed.

Remy Hair is considered to be one of the finest qualities of human hair because the cuticles are kept intact and not stripped, like in most other non-Remy hair extensions. Preserving the hairs cuticles and aligning them in a unidirectional fashion creates extensions that are provides a more natural looking appearance. This process ensures that the hair remains super soft, shiny, silky and completely tangle-free throughout its lifetime.

This is an accurate picture of how remy hair should look like. The shine and luster.

Remy Human Hair means the hair has been carefully sorted after collecting from the hair donor to ensure all the cuticles are the same length and facing the same direction. It is one of the best quality human hair extensions on the market because of the care that goes into making sure that all of the cuticles are aligned and facing the same direction. Aligning the cuticles is a time consuming process. Tremendous care has been taken to ensure that the life of the hair can be extended.

This is not real Remy Hair. This is a mixed cheap version of mixed fibers.

What is the difference between synthetic and human hair extensions? Remy Hair is made from human hair which can be color dyed, thermal styled (curled or straightened), styled, washed, and treated like your own natural hair. Hair extensions made from synthetic hair are sensitive to the sun, don’t last as long as human hair, are difficult to style (due to the not being able to curl or straighten or apply heat), and cannot blend in as well with your natural hair (due to silicone coating and heaviness of the fibers used). Expect to pay anywhere from $40-$150 for Synthetic hair extensions or wigs due to the short life span. Actual remy hair or human hair extensions will cost anywhere from $100-$2000 for human hair extensions or wigs.

Human hair extensions can seem like a costly investment but can last anywhere up to 5+ years if properly cared for by a professional. Compared to the unrealistic wiggy look you get with synthetic extensions.Which are meant for short term applications ( proms, weddings, special occasion events). We need to as women put a little more effort into what we use to achieve the level of beauty that is equal to that which is equal to what’s on the inside.

Episode 117: What Is European Hair Extensions?

By Mariah

I have had a lot of women ask me the question what is European hair or Russian hair extensions, and how is it better? And how does it compare to the hair we buy in the beauty supply stores. These two things are worlds apart from each other.

Let me first explain some key terms and a little geography lesson. European hair primary is derived from European countries such as Turkey, Uzbekistan, Eurasian and Ukrainian. These countries are great for harvesting hair that has natural blondes, reds, browns shades due to the genetics of the surrounding countries. This means that the hair does not need to be dyed to achieve a specific color. Which means the hair is healthier and will last longer. Now the hair can still be dyed, but the color does not have to go through such a drastic lifting process, which can lead to dying out the hair if the bleach is left on too long.

The hair that you are purchasing from your local beauty supply is usually not 100 % human hair. And to make sure you understand what you are buying just look and trust the feel. If the hair is too shiny or waxy looking you are more than likely looking at a mix of Toyokalan and a couple of dyed Chinese hair strands. But most of it is a man made fiber that usually only last 30-90 days and then it begins to look dry and brittle. It will start looking drastically different not blending with your natural hair. This hair is not made to last longer than 60 days because it is made to be cheap enough to be affordable, but a cheap enough quality to have you right back buying more. This type of hair is a revolving door of wasted time and money. Take a second and look at the money factor

Beauty Supply Hair

1. 1 package of Blonde 4 oz $112 X 2 = $224 X 4 (spent every 3 months) = Total $896

European Hair Extensions

2. European Human Hair (Grade 3A) 4 oz $299 X 2 (last for longer than 1 year if properly cared for by a licensed stylist) = Total $598 * additional 2-4 oz may need to be purchased to accommodate style changes. Including the additional purchase of 4 oz of hair which will give you a total of 12 oz = Total $897

Now that you see where your money is going let’s look at the quality factor. Human hair is just that hair that has been collected from a live donor so it feels, looks, moves just like real hair. If you ever have noticed that hair from the beauty supply does not move like human hair because the fibers are heavier than natural hair. This creates a flat hairstyle after a while. Yes, you can curl it but when you jump or move naturally does it move like your natural hair? Probably not, and this is a dead give away that is not your hair.

Episode 106: How long should you wear hair extensions?

Beautiful woman

By Rico

I know that most women love they’re hair extensions but they don’t last foor-eeveeer. You have to be kind to your own hair. If you leave the extensions in for an extended amount of time it will start to matte and you begin to work against the reason for wearing them, which is to grow your own hair out to your desired length. Let’s talk what’s what in the land of hair extensions. The differences in the installment which would give you the desired look.

Hair Extensions ex·ten·sion noun \ik-ˈsten(t)-shən\
an increase in length of hair; specifically : an increase in hair length installed by a professional stylist or cosmetologist. This method is commonly installed as to extend the length in sections by blending in your own hair with the extra hair.

Hair Weaving hair·weav·ing [hair-wee-ving] noun
the attachment of matching hair to a base of nylon thread interwoven with a person’s remaining hair, to cover a bald or braided area leaving little to no hair visibly out or exposed.

Now that we have explained the difference of which technique can be used to install hair extensions, lets get down to how long you should leave in the installment before taking down and reinstalling. I totally understand that these installments are expensive but please understand that leaving an installment in for extended amount of time will cause damage to hair follicles and cause hair thinning.

Time Table / Time Period / Cause if left longer

Hair Weaving 2 months – 3 months matting, hair lost, thinning

Hair Extensions Weft 2 months – 3 months matting, hair lost, thinning

Hair Extensions Micro Ring 3 months – 4 months (*) thinning, hair lost

Hair Extensions Glue / Fusion 4 weeks – 6 weeks hair lost, thinning

Lace Wigs 5 days – 14 days (*) hair lost,thinning

• This time line is tentative based on your own personal hair type and hair growth. Also due to personal body sweat, medicines, etc.

The length of time a hair installment will last depends largely on the type of hair quality used for the extensions, the skill level of the stylist installing it, and the application method used to install it. There are the sew-in and glue-in extension wefts that can last as long as three months if properly maintained. But please know that you or your stylist should check the hair installment every 4-6 weeks to make sure there are no problems developing between your hair and the installment at the scalp. Also ensure that you are not having any allergic reactions to the adhesive used in installment and to make sure the adhesive is holding well. So in the words from Ms.Vanessa Bell “ You better know your weaver” Always know that you pay for the level of skill you receive.

Episode 101: How do you clean hair extensions or wigs

By Rico

Hello ladies and gentlemen,

Welcome to the world of healthy hair care. My name is Rico and I am the resident hairstylist to the ladies here at AEOMH. I will be the writer and adviser on the blog. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email me at rico@alleyesonmehair.com.

Today I will be outlining how to properly clean hair extensions or wigs. Keep all hair clean is the golden rule when sweat and dirt accumulate onto hair extensions it will start to dull the hair and strip the shine off the hair. I suggest that you wash the hair extensions or lace wig at least once or twice a week with warm or cold water. Please do not ever use hot water. Hot water can strip what proteins have been locked into the hair. Please wash the hair immediately after swimming, spa, exercise, and etc.

Create a detangler / leave-in conditioner. By adding a mixture of conditioner (10%) and water (90%)into a spray bottle. That is what your basic leave-in conditioner is a water and conditioner mixture. Before washing the hair, spray the hair with the mixture. Begin brushing the hair from the bottom and working your way up. Gradually untangling any hair that has become entangled. You must gradually wet the hair down and brush it gently before you completely wash the hair. If the hair is very dry and a lot of water is added at once, the hair will become very puffy and swell up like a sponge and tangle! Therefore, it is important to gradually wet the hair and brush it.

How to clean and wash hair extensions

1. Add shampoo to the hair and brush in a straight down motion. Please rinse hair in warm water.

2. Add conditioner and brush thoroughly in the same direction.

3. Allow conditioner to sit on the hair for atleast a duration of 10-20 minutes. Rinse hair thoroughly with warm water.

4. The best drying method is to allow the hair to air dry. The hair can also be blow-dried with a low to medium heat setting.

All shampoos are not good for hair extensions. Please check the labels of the shampoo that you use on your extensions. What is needed to maintain the life of your hair extensions might not be what you’re using. Also might be the reason the hair is starting to loose that shine. Please check out Episode #102 How to choose a PH balanced shampoo for your hair and extensions.

P.S. Asian, Indian, and Brazilian hair responds better to a low PH shampoo 3.5-5
