Episode 101: How do you clean hair extensions or wigs

By Rico

Hello ladies and gentlemen,

Welcome to the world of healthy hair care. My name is Rico and I am the resident hairstylist to the ladies here at AEOMH. I will be the writer and adviser on the blog. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email me at rico@alleyesonmehair.com.

Today I will be outlining how to properly clean hair extensions or wigs. Keep all hair clean is the golden rule when sweat and dirt accumulate onto hair extensions it will start to dull the hair and strip the shine off the hair. I suggest that you wash the hair extensions or lace wig at least once or twice a week with warm or cold water. Please do not ever use hot water. Hot water can strip what proteins have been locked into the hair. Please wash the hair immediately after swimming, spa, exercise, and etc.

Create a detangler / leave-in conditioner. By adding a mixture of conditioner (10%) and water (90%)into a spray bottle. That is what your basic leave-in conditioner is a water and conditioner mixture. Before washing the hair, spray the hair with the mixture. Begin brushing the hair from the bottom and working your way up. Gradually untangling any hair that has become entangled. You must gradually wet the hair down and brush it gently before you completely wash the hair. If the hair is very dry and a lot of water is added at once, the hair will become very puffy and swell up like a sponge and tangle! Therefore, it is important to gradually wet the hair and brush it.

How to clean and wash hair extensions

1. Add shampoo to the hair and brush in a straight down motion. Please rinse hair in warm water.

2. Add conditioner and brush thoroughly in the same direction.

3. Allow conditioner to sit on the hair for atleast a duration of 10-20 minutes. Rinse hair thoroughly with warm water.

4. The best drying method is to allow the hair to air dry. The hair can also be blow-dried with a low to medium heat setting.

All shampoos are not good for hair extensions. Please check the labels of the shampoo that you use on your extensions. What is needed to maintain the life of your hair extensions might not be what you’re using. Also might be the reason the hair is starting to loose that shine. Please check out Episode #102 How to choose a PH balanced shampoo for your hair and extensions.

P.S. Asian, Indian, and Brazilian hair responds better to a low PH shampoo 3.5-5
